Top teams seek to sustain run in crossover showdowns

As the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference kicks off its crossover prelims round, expect the competition to heat up as the top teams from Pool B face off against the bottom three from Pool A at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Saturday.

Unbeaten Akari, and Cignal, and Capital1 look to have the upper hand with their carryover records after strong performances in the first round of prelims. However, reversals from Galeries Tower, Farm Fresh, and Nxled can’t be ruled out. With the quarterfinals in sight, these underdogs are motivated to raise their game and defy the odds.

The Chargers (5-0) will battle the Hightowers (0-5) at 1 p.m., while the HD Spikers (4-1) will face off against the Foxies (2-3) at 3 p.m. The Solar Spikers (3-2) will then clash with the Chameleons (1-4) at 5 p.m. in Pool D matches.

On Tuesday, the top teams from Pool A – Chery Tiggo, Creamline, and PLDT – all with 4-1 records, will take on Choco Mucho (1-4), Petro Gazz (2-3), and ZUS Coffee (0-5), respectively, in Pool C play.

The top four teams from each pool will advance to the knockout quarterfinals.

All eyes will be on Akari, which dominated Pool B with a flawless five-game sweep, securing an early lead in the race to the quarterfinals. Led by the prolific Oly Okaro, Akari received solid support from locals Grethcel Soltones, Joy Soyud, Ivy Lacsina, Camille Victoria, and Ced Domingo, overpowering even the strongest rivals, including the HD Spikers.

The Hightowers, despite their winless campaign, are poised for a breakthrough. Thai import Chuewulim Sutadta has been a standout, but she will need consistent support from teammates like France Ronquillo, Dimdim Pacres, Graze Bombita, RJ Doromal, Roselle Baliton and Andrea Marzan to turn things around.

Cignal, eager to bounce back from its recent loss to Akari, will lean on the fiery MJ Perez to lead the charge. Perez will be supported by key players such as Ces Molina, Roselyn Doria, Chin Basas, Jacqueline Acuna, Riri Meneses and playmaker Gel Cayuna as they look to get back on track.

Farm Fresh is ready to rise to the occasion, with import Yeny Murillo determined to redeem herself after a subpar 11-point performance against PLDT last Thursday. Trisha Tubu, riding the momentum of her double-digit scoring streak, will be backed by teammates Kate Santiago, Aprylle Tagsip, Pia Ildefonso, Caitlin Viray and Chinnie Arroyo.

Capital1, meanwhile, will aim to maintain its current form, led by high-scoring import Marina Tushova. Norielle Ipac, Des Clemente, Jenya Torres and Leila Cruz are eager to spearhead another Solar Spikers' assault.

The Chameleons, on the other hand, will rely on Meegan Hart, along with locals Jho Maraguinot, Chiara Permentilla, Jalia Atienza, and Trisha Genesis, to mount a strong challenge and bolster their backdoor bid in the mid-season conference of the league organized by Sports Vision.
