Roger Gorayeb hails Capital1 progress despite debut defeats

For the Capital1 Solar Spikers, their maiden voyage in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference was a baptism of fire.

However, amidst the challenges, Head Coach Roger Gorayeb sees a glimmer of hope, a path forward illuminated by the resilience and dedication of his squad.

The journey began just two weeks before the tournament's commencement, a whirlwind of introductions and camaraderie-building exercises. Gorayeb reminisces with a chuckle about the early days when players struggled to recall each other's names, a testament to the diverse backgrounds from which they hailed. Yet, through laughter and shared experiences, a bond began to form, forged in the crucible of competition.

"May time nung nag-start kami, one week ba o two weeks na lang opening na. Nagpa-practice kami (tapos may nagtanong) ‘Ano nga pala pangalan mo?’ Tawa ako nang tawa. By face, kilala nila ang isa’t isa pero by name, hindi pa," recalled Gorayeb, his smile reflecting the team's journey from strangers to teammates.

As the tournament progressed, the Solar Spikers faced formidable adversaries, their mettle tested in every match. Despite finishing in 11th place, Gorayeb lauds his team's progress, acknowledging the distance they've traveled since those early days of uncertainty.

"At least slowly, inch by inch, we are getting there. That’s the most important thing," Gorayeb remarked, a note of determination in his voice.

However, Gorayeb's aspirations extend beyond mere improvement. With an unwavering gaze fixed on the horizon, he demands excellence from his players, setting a higher standard for the upcoming conference.

"I cannot accept this kind of game in the next conference, they should be more aggressive. They should be a more smarter player given the experience they had. Gamitin nila," Gorayeb asserted, his words a rallying cry for renewed vigor and strategic acumen.

The road ahead promises both challenges and opportunities. As the team prepares for a well-deserved break, Gorayeb and the management strategize their next moves, laying the groundwork for future success.

"We’ll try to see who will be available, madagdagan kami," Gorayeb revealed, hinting at potential roster additions through scouting and free agency. "Ang hirap magsabi ng percentage kasi bente sila eh so sa ngayon kasi pagpapahingain ko muna sila then during that break, mag-assess kami."
