Amidst the start of the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference, Mylene Paat, the shining star of Chery Tiggo, found herself sidelined, tending to a right foot injury.
Nevertheless, her absence failed to diminish the team's determination and spirit, as they clinched a remarkable victory over Farm Fresh in an unforgettable opening match.
Aaron Velez, the leader of the Crossovers, provided fans with assurance that Paat's return was on the horizon.
"Rest assured, we are hurrying it. We are hurrying it while making sure she's at 100 percent," he said. Velez's words were a sigh of relief for supporters, particularly given Paat's exceptional performance in the 2022 PVL Reinforced Conference, where she earned the MVP title.
The Crossovers showcased their resilience in the face of adversity, racing to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Farm Fresh, even in the absence of Paat on the court. Although Velez refrained from divulging intricate details about Paat's injury, he did mention that she still had 20 percent swelling in her foot, leaving fans curious about the nature of her setback.
The turning point of the game featured Cess Robles, who came off the bench and made a significant impact with 10 points.
She stepped up in the absence of their experienced left-handed player, stating, "For me, we just need to fill what Ate My does on the court, her leadership, her style of play. Perhaps, that's what's important in helping the team."
Eya Laure, in her second conference with the Crossovers, led the way with 14 points, while her sister EJ contributed 13 points and nine excellent receptions. With Paat absent, Eya and the rest of Chery Tiggo were determined to carry her spirit with them onto the court. Setter Alina Bicar and middle blocker Seth Rodriguez were also missing, adding to the team's challenges.
"This is for them. While they're not here, we'll play for them. This isn't just for ourselves but also for Chery," shared Eya, underscoring the team's unity and dedication.
Velez expressed his anticipation for the day when Paat would rejoin the team, emphasizing her immense talent and experience that have been missed.
"Mylene's fire is a significant help to us, and at the same time, we want to showcase her talent to the fans," he said, leaving fans eagerly awaiting her triumphant return.
