Delos Santos urges Cignal reset after costly pressure issues in Game 1

Cignal came into the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference Finals carrying confidence—and a reminder that they had already beaten Creamline earlier in the tournament. But on Tuesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, that momentum quickly met a harsher reality.

The Creamline Cool Smashers showed exactly why they remain the league’s most decorated dynasty, turning the Finals opener into a controlled display of experience and poise. Behind steady execution in all departments, Creamline dispatched Cignal in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18, 25-16, and moved just one win away from claiming its sixth All-Filipino (including Open) championship and 11th overall crown.

For Cignal, the return to the Finals stage of the All-Filipino Conference brought a different kind of test—one that had less to do with skill and more with managing the weight of the moment.

Head coach Shaq Delos Santos pointed to the mental side of the game as the biggest hurdle his squad failed to clear in Game 1.

“Kausap ko yung team, I think yung pag-handle namin sa pressure mismo sa sarili namin... And siyempre bukod sa ang ganda ng performance ng Creamline, which is yun talaga ang normal na laro nila,” said Delos Santos.

The Super Spikers, no strangers to deep postseason runs after reaching the 2022 Reinforced and 2024 Invitational Finals, appeared unsettled on their first All-Filipino championship appearance. That unease showed, especially against a Creamline side that dictated tempo from start to finish.

Ironically, Cignal had just recently managed to outlast Creamline in a five-set duel during the qualifiers, and even earlier clinched its Finals seat by defeating the Cool Smashers in four sets in the semifinals. But those earlier breakthroughs only seemed to raise expectations—expectations that proved difficult to meet when the stakes were highest.

“Ang medyo hindi okay ay hindi namin nailabas kung anong meron talaga kami — performance-wise, and then siguro yung pag-handle ng every situation. Siguro mas naging excited na na-pressure dahil first time championship and grabe rin yung crowd,” Delos Santos admitted.

With Game 1 slipping away quickly, the veteran mentor stressed that Cignal’s biggest adjustment moving forward is internal—letting go of overthinking and returning to what brought them this far.

“Mas kailangan kong personally maniwala sa team and then sa sistema na meron kami. Ilaro lang namin. Sabi ko nga sa kanila, huwag niyo masyadong i-pressure ang sarili niyo, kasi mas gusto kong nailalaro natin kung ano yung naging investment natin before, paano tayo nag-prepare. Kaya nga tayo nakarating dito eh,” he said.

As the Finals shift to Game 2 on Thursday, still at the Big Dome, Cignal now faces a familiar crossroads for a contender under pressure: respond with clarity—or let the moment continue to slip away.

“Kailangan lumabas lang ang totoong laro natin and that’s it. Wala na tayong ibang pagsisisihan at pag-uusapan. Yun lang.”
